Would you tell us about yourself?
My name is Mel. I'm a television host and also the founder of the website MELSAYS.COM. I'm passionate about travel, fitness, food, fashion and surfing. My life is an adventure and I live each day as if it were my last.
How did you start running?
I started running seriously last winter. Prior to that, I had never run very much or had really enjoyed it much. Thanks to the amazing running community in Toronto and to the beautiful waterfront, running became a great outlet for me to relieve my stress and a way to stay active after long days at work. Last spring I signed up for my first ever race and haven't looked back since.
Do you run alone, mostly, or with a club or group?
Depending on the day, time and where I am located, I mix up my runs. Though I love solo runs, running with a group is also very encouraging. On certain days where I don't feel as motivated to run, I love being accompanied by at least one person. It makes a world of a difference. There are really great running clubs in Toronto and I have also met some amazing running clubs around the world thanks to the Nike running community.
How has running changed you?
Running has allowed me to be more present, to live more in the "now" and not so much in the future. Running has become very meditative for me. It's often my only solo time in the day. It not only allows me to reduce my stress and anxiety but it is also a great time for me to brainstorm and come up with ideas.
Do you remember the first moment you felt “like a runner”?
I always said that I was not a runner, but I think I "became" a runner when I ran my first race. I think once you start signing up to events that you pay money to run, I think you've officially become a runner.
Where is your most memorable running route or place would like share with us?
It's honestly hard to pick between the Seawall in Vancouver or the Marvin Braude Trail in Santa Monica. Both trails are absolutely stunning and just inspire you to keep going when you start getting tired and slowing down. When I'm in LA and Vancouver, I want to run every day if I can, just to observe the beauty around me.
What is your favourite distance?
A good 10k is always nice. Lately I have been working on my distance, working towards running my first half-marathon but 10k for me remains my favorite distance. It's fast, effective and clears your mind.
Would you share us a interesting running story?
The thing I love most about running is all of the amazing people that I've met from around the world through running. I love traveling to somewhere new or somewhere far away from home and being able to meet up with local runners or a local run crew to discover great new trails. Through running I have made some incredible new friends and I'm extremely grateful for that.
What is your running motivation right now?
Running my 1st half-marathon this year. I have run several 5,10,15k runs and am excited to take it to the next level before the year's end.
If we would like you to us one word or one sentence to represent your style, what would it be?
Rocker with a bohemian vibe.
Running with music: Yes or no? if yes, would you share us one of your favorite running track?
Yes! My playlist is constantly changing. I create new playlists on Spotify every season to go along with my mood and what I want to listen to. I listen to anything from punk-rock, hip hop, pop, etc.
What is your recipes for fitness?
Balance is key! I think it's important to vary your workouts because it keeps you on your toes, keeps your body working on different muscles and keeps you challenged. Nutrition is also a huge part of fitness for me so I make sure I fuel my body correctly for my workouts.
If you have a chance to design your own running apparel, what colour and pattern would you want to represent your running style?
My dream running gear would be black and gold. I also love arrows!
